Entering the Specific Category: The Future of Pro Flight

Since late 2024, national scenarios (S1, S2, S3 in France) have given way to European standard scenarios (CATS). This change allows portability of your authorizations throughout the European Union.

CATS-01: Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) Operations

This scenario replaces the French S3. It is dedicated to missions in populated areas.

  • **Remote Pilot:** Mandatory CATS certificate + practical training.
  • **Drone:** **C5** class required (or a C3 drone with a C5 conversion kit).
  • **Constraint:** Overflying uninvolved persons strictly prohibited without a safety "buffer".

  • CATS-02: Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) Operations

This scenario replaces S2. It allows flying up to 2km from the pilot, but with reinforced safety requirements.

  • **Drone:** **C6** class mandatory.
  • **Security:** Often requires an "Airspace Observer" to monitor incursions from other aircraft.
  • **Height:** Always limited to 120m ground height.

  • The MANEX: Manual of Special Activities

Even in a standard scenario, a pro operator must possess an up-to-date MANEX. This document describes your emergency procedures, maintenance plan, and battery maintenance management.

**Vigilance Point:** In CATS, electronic reporting is essential from the first meter of flight.
